And that gentle tone-mapping can add presence to an image without "that HDR look". But I've learned that properly and subtly done, fusion of multiple exposures (in my case, all derived from a single Raw file) can produce nice results.

Or maybe it's because I'm not an HDR person so I don't know any better.

That's odd, because I've never been an HDR person. Of Franzis's various offerings, I've been most impressed by their HDR package. I don't use Lightroom, and I'm still on Version 2 anyway, so I can't say how useful that plugin is. Version 3 supposedly comes with a Lightroom plugin. The lack of a standard Undo (you can make checkpoints) is an almost constant irritation to me. The lack of proper cropping remains an annoyance, and the limited layer masking features are disappointing. The version "3" of their various products all seem to have their new Raw module, which is a huge step forward over their previous "pick a color temperature before you open the Raw file" approach. However, the user interface tends to be clunky, sometimes to the point of frustration, especially in the older versions. The underlying image-processing logic seems very well-made and produces excellent results.

My take: I've picked up a number of older Franzis programs as promotional freebies. Through the end of October, they're offering their HDR Projects 3 Professional for $40 (USD), compared to the usual price of over $250 (exact amount depending on the Euro/Dollar exchange rate). The German software/publishing company Franzis has been trying to expand its sales outside of Germany.
